Jorge Chavarria Rodriguez, 16, of Arlington, Virginia, died tragically on Thursday, September 21, 2023, in Arlington. Jorge, affectionately known as “Apodo” and “El Flaco” by family and friends, had just begun his freshman year at Wakefield High School, in Arlington. Born August 1, 2007, in St. Michael, El Salvador, he had resided in Arlington since the age of eight.

He attended Barcroft Elementary School and Kenmore Middle School prior to enrolling at Wakefield. Jorge was always very affectionate with his siblings and friends and he was beloved by his teachers and classmates in school. He had been recognized throughout his academic years for his helpfulness and contributions to the community. He was a devoted Christian who had served in volunteer roles in his church.

Jorge’s achievements included becoming fully bilingual in English and Spanish. He was extremely proud to be a volunteer in the The Phoenix Bikes Youth Program.  He loved helping others in his neighborhood have access to safe bikes. This desire to be of assistance to others was a big part of who Jorge was as a child and who he planned to become as an adult. He had aspirations to be an attorney or to join the military to support the greater good.

His family will remember him as a kind, jovial, and friendly child who had the promise to accomplish great things in this world.

Jorge is survived by his devoted mother, Luz Marina Rodriguez Portillo, of Arlington, his father, Tony Ronaldo Chavarria Velásquez, of El Salvador, siblings Tony Ronaldo Chavarria Rodriguez, Larizza Gabriela Chavarria Rodriguez, Yuri Emerald Chavarria, Brenda Aracely Chavarria, Glenda Elizabeth Chavarria Dominguez, Anthony Ronaldo Chavarria Dominguez, his grandparents, Sonia Estela Portillo Lopez and Ernesto Antonio Rodrigues Soliz, a nephew, Jonathan Ronald Chavarria Amaya, a dear cousin, Alexandra Rodriguez, and close friends Nick Alejandro Coleman and Marisol Queen.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jonathan Javier Chavarría.
