Marc Richard Genberg, 52, of Falls Church, Virginia, died on October 7th, 2017. He was born February 14th, 1965, in Rockville Centre, New York. He is survived by beloved wife Toni, parents Richard and Carol (Gerber), brother Scott (Sandy) Genberg, and sisters Laura Jahn & Amy Genberg. Marc’s nephews and nieces are Ethan, Matthew and Hannah Jahn, and Mitchell, Christopher and Elizabeth Genberg.
Marc was a sweet Valentine’s Day baby, born on February 14, 1965, on Long Island, New York, the son of Richard and Carol Genberg. The family, with Marc’s siblings Laura, Scott, and Amy, enjoyed Block Island beach vacations, game nights, day trips to the local beaches and museums, and family bike rides. These journeys inspired Marc’s love of history and cycling. Marc’s happy, playful personality often led to antics that made everyone laugh. He was often found dressing up, making faces or just being silly. He always knew how to light up a room.
People naturally gravitated toward Marc and he was always surrounded by friends. His mom fondly recalls crowds of teenagers around the dining room table actively playing Dungeons and Dragons. (Note that Marc was considered a great “Dungeon Master”.) At Garden City High School, Marc participated in community soccer, was on the school’s fencing team, played the clarinet and bass guitar, and was a swingin’ member of the jazz club. He graduated in 1983.
As a burgeoning history buff, he played not only D&D but also military strategic board games beginning in his early teenage days. One of his favorite games as an adult was Advanced Squad Leader (ASL). Although Marc was competitive, he played his opponents for the camaraderie. Like many gamers, he also enjoyed computer games, playing online with either his nephews or hundreds of strangers. He was addicted to The Lord of the Rings and most recently, World of Tanks.
When he was just six years old, Marc had his sights set on being a United States Marine. It was no surprise to his parents when he graduated from high school that he proudly accepted a full United States Naval ROTC scholarship, with a Marine Corps option, attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. He was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity where he was affectionately known as "Recon." In 1987, Marc successfully completed the rigorous academic and physical requirements, earned a BS degree in Management, and was awarded his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Serving in several command level assignments, Marc continued to excel as a young Marine officer and eventually was promoted to the rank of Captain, completing his eight-year service to our country. While serving in the Marines, he earned an MBA in Business Administration at National University.
Marc ran his own IT consulting company for 10 years and then moved into the private sector. He held the positions of Senior Financial Analyst, Lead Engineer and most recently Project Manager for Aegis.net, where he was a valued employee for eight years. Marc’s colleagues will remember a mentor, role model and friend, noting that “Marc was the type of leader that did not demand obedience or order his employees around. He led by inspiring, empowering and trusting; he made you want to do your best.”
Marc’s passion for cycling motivated him to become a USA Cycling certified coach. He powered Genberg Coaching for 14 years. During this period, he developed his clients’ skills and helped them increase their performance during training rides and ultimately in competition.
People who have had the privilege of knowing Marc have described him as “amazingly smart” and “having keen intelligence,” and they’ve said that he had “remarkable intellect and shared that gift with us willingly.” Marc could easily process technical information and explain the material clearly; the words he articulated were thoughtfully formed and insightful. Knowledge and understanding were lifelong ambitions and he continued to educate himself and received multiple certifications not only in his professional field but also as a cycling coach.
And then magic happened. Marc met Toni Lindsay in February of 2000 through their mutual love for motorcycling. They happened to be riding the same kind of bike: the Suzuki Bandit. (Hers was teal; his was blue.) They married in 2003. They both enjoyed the great outdoors and created many unforgettable memories while hiking, traveling and simply being together. A few of their favorite trips were to Peru, New Zealand and more recently, Glacier National Park. Marc and Toni lived in Falls Church, Virginia, where they shared their love for nature and the wild creatures that lived around them.
One can easily see that the outdoors and physical activity were major priorities throughout Marc’s life. He regularly lifted weights, ran, hiked, paddled, and bicycled. He was a rock climber and a certified scuba diver. His first competitive race was at the age of 13, running in a “Turkey Trot” 5K. That run led to numerous competitive events over the years, including marathons and day-long adventure races. But Marc’s primary passion was cycling and his enthusiasm for two wheels continued up until the day he left us.
A member of The Bike Lane team and family for the last 10 years, Marc gave endlessly to the team and to the cycling community. He was selfless with his time, his mentorship, and his coaching. He was the humblest competitor. Marc had an uncanny way of giving a teammate one piece of advice that changed their training forever. It could be the worst conditions, the steepest hill, or the rockiest descent and Marc would have the biggest grin, always happy to be out riding his bike.
Deepest gratitude goes out to Shawn, Kristen and Joseph, and the other kind strangers who administered aid to Marc.
